PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATION:
From May 1, 2013 to date:
I have been working for Agence France Presse (AFP), one of the largest news
agencies in the world, as its correspondent in Southern Pakistan. In this
capacity I am covering all the major national issues including politics,
economics and social sectors. The job requires real time writing of news
stories as they unfold so that they could reach the AFP clients all over the
world. Besides filing hard news, I also write features and article with
interesting human angles on the issues shaping or affecting this society.
I also contribute to a United Nation portal covering humanitarian issues in the
developing countries. I recently got one of my detailed articles (5000 words)
on volatile Karachi and the national elections published in the La Monde
Diplomatique, one of the top French magazines.
Besides I am also writing for Gulf
News, the prestigious Middle Eastern newspaper.
2007 till June 1st, 2012
I worked for the Associated Press (AP), again one of the world's
largest and the oldest news wire, as its Karachi based correspondent.
My responsibility involved coverage of spots, writing features and
general assignment reports to meet the wire requirements that aimed at
an international readership. In this capacity I covered mega
happenings like 2010 historical flood in Pakistan, arrival of slain
leader Benazir Bhutto and the epoch attempt on her life. I extensively
covered Ms Bhutto's rallies in southern Pakistan. War on terror has
been the primary focus of the AP so coverage of high profile al-Qaeda
and Taliban arrests and their bloody attacks on western and local
targets were also the part of my reporting.
December 2006 to September 2007
Worked as Controller News for News One of the Airwaves Media. In this
supervisory role I built the team for the then upcoming news channel,
besides overseeing the news quality, which was my primary task. I
augmented the hourly bulletin, which is broadcast 24-hour a day, and
heralded my reporters' team to make quality stuff available for our
bulletin. My job also involved planning for programming and
administrating a staff of more than 200 people in Karachi, who worked
in three shifts. I also supervised the Lahore and Islamabad bureaus
besides a chain of correspondents across the country.
2001-November 2006
• I worked as reporter for Agence France Presse (AFP), at its Karachi bureau.
My primary beat at the bureau was covering economic and commerce.
This included coverage of central State Bank of Pakistan (reporting on
quarterly and annual reports; major monetary policy issues) capital
market, energy sector, aviation and major corporate events in a
generalize way so as to meet the wire requirements. I wrote weekly
stock market reviews and features on core economic as well as
socio-economic issues.
The September 11 terrorist attacks on the US, however, bolstered my
profile significantly as I was assigned to cover the issues regarding
war on terror. I did it to the best satisfaction of my editors in
Islamabad and Hong Kong. I have on my credit the coverage of court
trial of US journalist Daniel Pearl's kidnapping and murdering. I did
spot coverage of many bomb attacks on the Western targets by the
al-Qaeda sponsored groups in Karachi besides deadly sectarian attacks.
I also covered the devastating earthquake on October 8th in Kashmir
and northwestern towns of Pakistan.
• Worked as freelance for Hong Kong-based Far Eastern
Economic
Review (FEER). For the magazine I wrote, till the magazine’s
unfortunate closure in 2004, many articles focusing on Pakistan's
privatization, capital market, physical infrastructure, and
macro-economic developments.
• Worked as freelance for Christian Science Monitor
of the US
and South China Morning Post of Hong Kong.
Also worked as freelance for BBC radio Urdu service programme 'Your Economy'.
• January 2003 to 2004
• Worked as Assistant Editor in 2005 for Daily Times, a
leading
English daily in Pakistan.
1994-2002
• Worked for Business Recorder, the top financial daily of the
country, as senior correspondent. I began my job at newspaper's
Islamabad bureau. At the bureau I pioneered energy sector as a beat
and extensively covered crucial issues regarding the sector. For three
years I highlighted energy sector in my news report including oil and
gas exploration activities, regional gas pipelines, energy policy and
witnessed transformation of strictly regulated sector to
liberalization and market-oriented. I also worked on other topics
including macroeconomic issues, finance, and social sectors. This
helped me having rich exposure of the administrative hierarchy and the
government policy making mechanism and developing good contacts in
both private as well as public sector. In 1996 I joined the newspaper
head offices at Karachi. In Karachi, I covered energy sector including
oil, gas and petroleum companies; communication sectors, and the
corporate affairs of the concerned companies. I also covered
commodities market.
• Worked for Pakistan Television's World Transmission. Economy,
corporate and commerce sectors were my beats. I also filed stock
exchange review for the TV. The job involved having interviews,
writing script, editing etc.
• 1993 - Worked for the Finance. I assisted the management to set up
its bureau office at Islamabad.
• 1990-93. Began my professional career as apprentice sub-editor in
Pakistan Times, the country's pioneer and leading English daily. After
six months, I was confirmed as sub-editor and was assigned the
commerce desk. I supervised the desk for subsequent three years.
ACADEMIC QUALIFICATION:
• 1985-89. Got bachelor degree in commerce from the University of
Sindh securing second division.
• 7. I did my masters in economics from the same university in second division.
• 8. Attended several short courses and video conferences in financial
journalism, organised by World Bank, Commonwealth Union of Journalists
and other institutions. 9. I am well versed with variety of computer
software.

The
coverage given to the tragic incident of martyrs of Benazir Bhutto in the daily
Express Karachi was the idea conceptualized, developed and managed by me.
·
Samjhota
Express explosion news that I managed to get and published gave me significant
credit to my career as a News Editor as no other newspaper managed to carry
this news item. In journalism it is an
obvious pothole for a newspaper to miss any big event and at the same time a great
headway to be vigilant in its stance and essentially be able to carry out
coverage’s and draw feature on the big news exclusively.
·
Published
the exclusives pictures of a woman assassinated with the then Federal Minister

police of the invovlement of the minister in the murder and on the basis of
these pictures published the minister was arrested.
·
Managed
and initiated the publication of special issues with additional pages on the
important incidents and accidents that took place. It has great importance that
the initiation on publication was made by express for the special issue with
additional page to cover the big news particularly stories that have great
human interests.
·

on the 2008 Election was proved true. Defeat of the Chaudhri Brothers and 95
percent of his party candidates in the elections had been analyzed by myself
came true.
